Black Panther Charity Auction

Posted by Pat Kenrick on

Chadwick Boseman came into the comic community with his role as Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  When asked by journalist Ryan Gilbey if he felt pressure not to "screw up" the beloved comics character, Boseman responded by saying: "It's more positive than that. It's more like: 'Seize it. Enjoy it.'" The role of Black Panther in his title film earned Boseman a spot on the 2018 Time 100 as one of the world's most influential people. The movie is seen as a landmark in being the first mega-budget movie to have a predominantly black cast and director, as well as the first superhero film to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture.

Chadwick Boseman was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer in 2016, which eventually progressed to stage IV before 2020. He never spoke publicly about his cancer diagnosis, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, "only a handful of non-family members knew that Boseman was sick... with varying degrees of knowledge about the severity of his condition." Boseman died at his home as a result of complications related to colon cancer on August 28, 2020, with his wife and family by his side.

Many fellow actors and other celebrities paid tribute to Boseman on social media following the announcement of his death, including a number of his Marvel Cinematic Universe co-stars. Marvel Studios president and CCO Kevin Feige called Boseman's death "absolutely devastating", writing: "Each time he stepped on set, he radiated charisma and joy, and each time he appeared on screen, he created something truly indelible. Now he takes his place as an icon for the ages."

We want to honor Chadwick Boseman. We both thought long and hard about the impact Boseman and the Black Panther movie had on Black communities and on the overall comic community. Pat still really wanted to make this piece of art to honor Chadwick Boseman, so we have decided on a way to honor him, his death, and his impact within our community.

Pat released his new Black Panther artwork on August 13, 2021. Ever since Chadwick Boseman died, Pat has wanted to do a new Black Panther, honoring Chadwick Boseman's portrayal of Black Panther. But we both had some reservations about taking money away from Black Creators/Artists, about our White Privilege, and about the perception of  making money off of Boseman's death.  So we came up with a plan that we think will honor Boseman, and not take away from the Black Community.

We are selling Pat's original Black Panther watercolor cut out artwork and donating 100% of the proceeds to charity. We researched multiple charities and decided to donate to the American Cancer Society.  The American Cancer Society (ACS) is a nationwide voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer. Established in 1913, the society is organized into six geographical regions of both medical and lay volunteers operating in more than 250 Regional offices throughout the United States.

We are using eBay to process the auction of the artwork. Ebay waives all fees when donating to charity, and automatically donates the proceeds. This makes donating easy for us, and secures the trust of you all to know that 100% of the final auction price will go directly to the American Cancer Society.

Please take a look at the auction  and if you would like a chance at winning the piece, bid on the auction. The auction is live and will end on August 28, the one-year anniversary of Boseman's passing.

Thank you all. And most of all, Thank you Chadwick.
